ExxonMobil launches Apple Pay

More than 6,000 ExxonMobil fuel stations in the US are accepting Apple Pay as a payment method.

However, it’s not a tap-to-pay like other point-of-sale systems that work with Apple Pay. ExxonMobil is integrating Apple Pay into its’ own Speedpass+ app. The app is free to download and will use geolocation to locate the nearest station. Customers can drive to the pump, enter the pump number and use their fingerprint to authorise payment through Apple Pay. It can be used to buy car wash if the station offers the service.

ExxonMobil is the first fuel company to roll out a mobile payment system in a large scale. By integrating Apple Pay into Speedpass+ app, ExxonMobil is using an easier and cheaper way to expand the payment system to its network of stations across the country. All the stations need to do is install software update on their payment systems, instead of costly upgrade of pumps.
